about

Transition States is an album exploring several scientific principles and forces important in chemistry and biology by means of music. The core principles used as compositional tools are transition and equilibrium, i.e. dynamics and stasis. The music of the album is oscillating between these opposite principles until it gradually finds a rest in equilibrium. Each track is inspired by a specific chemical or physical concept. Below are short definitions of these concepts, beginning with the concept of transition state, which is the frame concept informing all tracks on the album. The following concepts of weak bond, subatomic world, excited state, metastability and equilibrium specifically inform individual tracks.

Transition State
During a chemical reaction, the molecules involved in the reaction gain energy until they reach a “point of no return” known as a transition state. The transition state is a central concept of chemistry, but it cannot directly be observed. The structure of the transition state can only be determined by detailed observation of the products that result from the reaction. This is sometimes expressed by stating that the transition state has a fleeting existence.

Weak Bond
Weak bonds are those forces of attraction that, in biological situations, do not take a large amount of energy to break. In biological systems, weak bonds are being continually broken and reformed without the aid of enzymes. Weak bonds may be easily broken but they are very important because they help to determine and stabilize the shapes of biological molecules.

Subatomic
Subatomic world is populated by elementary particles, various self-contained units of matter or energy that are the fundamental constituents of all matter. More than 200 subatomic particles have been detected—most of them highly unstable, existing for less than a millionth of a second—as a result of collisions produced in cosmic ray reactions or particle accelerator experiments.

Excited State
The state of a hydrogen atom, or any submicroscopic system, may change from one configuration to another by emitting or absorbing a discrete amount of energy. Such configurations are also called energy levels; the atom, or system, is said to undergo a transition between two energy levels when it emits or absorbs energy. The lowest energy level of a system is called its ground state; higher energy levels are called excited states. Excitation is an elevation in energy level above an arbitrary baseline energy state.

Metastability
In chemical systems, a system of atoms or molecules involving a change in chemical bond can be in a metastable state, which lasts for a relatively long period of time. Molecular vibrations and thermal motion make chemical species at the energetic equivalent of the top of a round hill very short-lived. Metastable states that persist for many seconds (or years) are found in energetic valleys which are not the lowest possible valley. The stability or metastability of a given chemical system depends on its environment, particularly temperature and pressure.

Equilibrium
In a chemical reaction, chemical equilibrium is the state in which both reactants and products are present in concentrations which have no further tendency to change with time, so that there is no observable change in the properties of the system. This state results when the forward reaction proceeds at the same rate as the reverse reaction. The reaction rates of the forward and backward reactions are generally not zero, but equal. Thus, there are no net changes in the concentrations of the reactants and products. Such a state is known as dynamic equilibrium.
